School-based Programs & Resources

The Gambling Awareness Program (GAP) of the Canadian Mental Health Association, Saskatchewan Division, provides the public education and community development components of the provincial Problem Gambling Program.  Working in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the Problem Gambling Help-Line, Problem Gambling Counsellors, as well as casino Responsible Gambling staff, GAP strives to be an active and supportive program in the province.   A significant and important part of outreach includes educating middle years, high school and post-secondary students.

Presentations - GAP delivers interactive presentations and information sessions that targets students, parents, educators, guidance counsellors, faculty and school administration.  Modules are designed to meet specific curriculum outcomes for each grade or course.

Resources – GAP distributes an array of responsible gambling resource materials as part of their school-based programming.  GAP recently developed a Parent and Teacher Resource designed specifically to help educate and inform about the changing landscape of gambling and how video games, in app purchases, and on-line gaming may be cause for concern.  Teachers are often provided with resources such as an interactive computer game for students to play and learn more about such things as probability and randomness, along with some promotional items that are a big hit with youth!

Displays – Interactive GAP displays are often visible during school health fairs, teacher conventions and as part of Welcome Week activities at universities and trade schools.  The Campus Connection display, What’s On the Line? Is a highly visible and engaging display designed to draw post-secondary students to the booth.  Participants have an opportunity to ask questions, play a game such as the fun and skill-testing Plinko, pick up some helpful resource material, or simply just to talk and seek support and guidance from the friendly and knowledgeable GAP staff.
