School-based Programs & Resources

The Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch (GPEB) of the Ministry of Attorney General sponsors the delivery of our K to Grade 3 Story Book Initiative, engaging students with puppets featured in two story books, Frank's Sunny Day Adventure, and Coyote's Big Decision, which has the characters making decisions about risk taking, and allows children an opportunity to begin a dialogue about the pressure of listening to friends, making their own decisions, and benefits and draw backs of taking risks.  These stories are designed to be delivered either by the teacher or our Community Engagement Providers in the classroom.  Follow up with students happens via classroom discussion, colouring pages, and worksheets that accompany each story.

 For students in Grade 4 to Grade 12, we have developed, in conjunction with the Canadian Institute of Substance Use Research, 20 lesson plans, under the already established iMinds banner, spanning the subjects of Physical Education, English Language Arts, Socials, and Math, these lessons were designed by teachers to be easy to integrate into the classroom, and to align with the new BC Ministry of Education curriculum direction, focusing on laying the foundations of understanding to assist children and youth in navigating the complicated landscape of decision making around their participation with gambling.  The iMinds curriculum looks at the differences between games of skill and games of chance, explores the cultural context around gambling in Canada, examines the role of wealth and capitalism in relationship to gambling, and deconstructs media messages around gambling and much more.  Launch took place in September of 2017, and plans are underway to double the number of lessons and translate all 40 lessons into French.

 For older students GPEB delivers the Gam_iQ  initiative, a program designed to raise awareness about the risks associated with online gambling. This school-wide initiative, available in two versions, one for high school and one for post-secondary, runs on school campuses across the province, and is delivered by our Community Engagement Providers using an online quiz, accessed via iPad, at an interactive booth with trained student volunteers.
